Excellence in Education Award to Twyla Preising
Alpha Delta Kappa, International Honorary Sorority for Women Educators, sponsors the Excellence in Education award to give recognition for outstanding contributions to the field of education. Each state/nation in the Alpha Delta Kappa organization selects an award winner from among their members who are in good standing and employed in the education profession. State winners are selected by appointed committee members and are judged on professional dedication, knowledge, skills, professional achievement, success, school/community collaboration and contributions to the educational process.
Twyla Humphrey Preising of Phoenix was nominated by Chaparral High School department chair, Jeri Bishop and was named as the state winner at the Arizona Alpha Delta Kappa convention held in Tempe in April of 2010. She was presented with a plaque and a check for $200 by state chairman Valdine Brower.
The merits of Twyla's application were then forwarded to compete against state/national winners in the Southwest region that included California, Hawaii, Australia, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. The Southwest regional conference was recently held in Reno, Nevada during the month of July where Twyla Preising was announced as the winner for the region. She was presented with a trophy, especially designed lapel pin and a check for $200 by committee chairwoman, Darla Lathan of New Mexico. She will be featured along with the other 6 regional winners in the Alpha Delta Kappa publication, The Kappan, in December of 2010.
Each of the 7 regional winners will now submit their applications to the international selection committee for consideration. The international award will be announced at the Chicago convention in July of 2011. The international award includes a check for the recipient's school in the amount of $2500 to be used for professional development for the staff. An additional check for $2500 will be presented to the winner along with a plaque/trophy.
Twyla Humphrey Preising has been teaching for 27 years. She teaches Advanced Placement U.S. History and has set school and district records for student participation in the national test at a consistent 100% of those who take the test. She has also set school and district records as her students consistently achieve a pass rate on the national test of more than 90%. Her all time record was a 97% pass rate.
Twyla was also instrumental in promoting the inclusion of an honors level of U.S. History for the first time at Chaparral in the 2008-2009 school year. The course has grown in popularity to now offer four sections for academically gifted students.
Twyla Preising has been a member of Alpha Delta Kappa since 1988. She has served two times as chapter president; district II recording secretary and president-elect and state historian for Florida; state chaplain and state recording secretary for Arizona as well as state committee chair for scholarships and the Woman of Distinction award for Arizona.
Twyla Preising was born and reared in Statesboro, Georgia and is a three time graduate from Georgia Southern University with a bachelor of education in 1983, master of science for teachers in 1984 and an education specialist degree in 1988.

Interior Design samples requested
Chaparral’s Housing and Interior Design class welcome interior and design magazines. Other items appreciated include old samples (fabric samples, wall paper books, flooring and trim treatment) that you or your company may be throwing out! I do request smaller sample sizes because we do not have saws to cut into appropriate sizes pieces for student use.

I can arrange pickup or if you want to drop things off yourself, please contact me beforehand so I can give you directions to the back service drive area close to my classroom!

SUSD offers ebooks
We are pleased to announce that our school library now provides access to hundreds of ebooks. Our ebooks do not require an iPad, a Kindle reader or any special device – they are designed to be viewed on an internet-connected computer. The ebooks are also easily viewed on your SMARTboard or through your projector.
Hundreds of ebooks are available 24/7 at school, at home, or anywhere you have internet access. There is no limit on the number of students viewing/reading an individual title at the same time. Our ebook library offers constant access for everyone! The ebooks provide students, parents and teachers with a combination of printed text, narration, words, sounds, music, graphics, photos and animation. Many ebooks also include links to quizzes, activities and reviews. No passwords are required. Most of the ebooks are designed to appeal to K-5 students, but titles in the TumbleReadables collection include titles suitable for students K through 12. Take some time to explore the choices to see what might be appropriate for your students.
You will find links to our ebooks on the school library web page. Look for the ebooks link in the Library Catalogs section.

Student Drop-off in Auditorium Lot
No parents should be driving into the south lot or the visitor parking lot (off 70th Street) to drop or pick up students. This is a safety and emergency response issue as the volume of traffic does delay the arrival of emergency vehicles into our fire lanes.
Parents dropping off or picking up their students are to use the drive in the northwest parking lot by the Auditorium. Enter/exit off Gold Dust. Parent vehicles in the other lots have the potential to cause traffic jams with buses and student vehicles.
