Legislative Alert - 5/27/08
Hello -
Our earlier email has a typo in the email address, it should read spc@scottsdaleparentcouncil.org. You can also just reply to that email as well. Thanks so much for all your support!
The Scottsdale Parent Council
Dear Parents and Friends of Public Education,
We need your support TODAY! We would like to send a note to our Legislators letting them know that we only want a budget that includes a solution for public school utilities. So we are circulating a virtual petition and hope you will sign.
If you agree with the statement here below, please send your name AND address to spc@scottsdaleparetncouncil.org. By doing so, you will confirm your support of the statement AND be giving us permission to use your name in a petition to our legislators and others at the State government.
Thank you for taking the time before summer break to try to make an impact on your child's education and public schools across our State.
Together we can make a difference!
Francesca Thomas, SPC Legislative Liaison
We, as voters and parents, support funding actual utility costs for schools. These are basic operational costs that we expect the st ate to cover without raising local property taxes. Without these dollars, impacts to staff and programs will be unavoidable. We are not asking for extra, only for what schools need to operate- a responsibility that is clearly the State's. As local districts, we support over-and-above the basic needs with our local tax dollars. But we refuse to pay the State's share too. Please support a budget that holds our districts responsible for conserving energy and the State responsible for covering basic operational costs.

Matthew Millam Fan Club
Dear Chaparral Families,
Over the last few days the Chaparral student body has been collecting donations for the Matthew Millam Fan Club. Matthew Millam is the four year old son of our own physics teacher, Steve Millam. He has recently been diagnosed with leukemia and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.
It is the goal of the student body to somehow make a positive impact during this difficult time. Collaboratively, we would like to make a financial donation to the Millam family to be used as they see fit in regards to Matthew’s illness.
The student response during the last few days has been overwhelming. We would like to extend the opportunity to all Chaparral Families to help make a difference in Matthew’s battle against leukemia.
If you would like to become one of Matthews many fans, you may make a donation in cash or check form. Checks can be made out to Chaparral High School, Attn: Matthew Millam Fan Club. The deadline for financial contributions is Friday May 9, 2008. Please address your contributions to the bookstore. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Ryan Scott

100 SUSD High School students will have the opportunity to attend a 3-day/2-night Leadership Training Retreat in Prescott, AZ. The retreat is presented by Eddie Slowikowski, a motivational speaker who engages students in his program, Life Ride.
Life Ride is an incredible journey of self-discovery, personal empowerment and fun at the most innovative leadership camp around. This weekend retreat will heighten awareness to the dangerous consequences of risky driving behaviors and help students to realize that their choices while driving can affect their own lives and the lives of those they share our roadways with.
Download permission slips or they are available in room 220. They are due Friday, March 7.
Stay Alive Arizona - Chaparral Chapter
The Stay Alive Arizona Chapter at Chaparral High School recently had the opportunity to share the Stay Alive AZ program at Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy in Prescott Unified School District.
Stay Alive AZ, a non-profit organization dedicated to prevention programs for young teen drivers, mobilizes community resources and youth serving non-profits in order to provide students with a real look into fatal and near-fatal collisions. The overall mission of Stay Alive is to raise awareness to the dangers teens face behind the wheel. The mini series program utilizes a curriculum that places students on a thought provoking journey that exposes them to the truth about collisions and the choices they can make to stay safe. The mini series aims to heighten awareness among our young drivers to the dangers of the following risky behaviors: speeding, lack of seatbelt use, red light running, talking on cell phone, text messaging while driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving with multiple teens in the car, and driver error and over correction.
Stay Alive anticipates students will have increased knowledge in the following areas: victims of fatal car collisions-family, friends, community, behind the scenes of fatal collision: the roles of our police, fire and healthcare professionals, near fatal collision: permanent lifelong disabilities, both head and spinal cord injuries, alcohol and drug use; what effect it has on the body and the effect it has while driving, legal ramifications: Arizona laws pertaining to driving under the influence, sharing our roadways with bicyclists and pedestrians, and defensive driving skills.
Eight Chaparral students had the opportunity to travel to Prescott February 6th through February 8th and attend the mini series at Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy. Chaparral students, together with the Northpoint students, attended Stay Alive presentations. Following the presentations, Chaparral students were invited to attend classes with Northpoint students. They engaged in small group discussions and shared experiences. After school, Chaparral students went 'Boulder Hiking' and took in the beautiful sites of Prescott.. Later that evening, students from Northpoint hosted a night out for Chaparral students that included a tour around the Courtyard Square, dinner at the historical Palace Restaurant and an evening stroll to an Art Gallery for Dessert. Students enjoyed learning about Prescott and having the opportunity to attend a different school, meet new friends and learn more about safe driving.

2008 Chaparral High School Golf Fundraiser
Benefiting Chaparral High School
Dear Families, Friends, and Supporters of Chaparral High School,
The Chaparral High Association of Parents, Teachers and Students (CHAPTS) is hosting its’ annual Golf Tournament and Silent Auction on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at Orange Tree Golf Resort. We have reserved a beautiful day for golf, and you might even drive home in a 2008 Audi or BMW! The goal is to raise funds for the benefit of all Chaparral students. CHAPTS makes a financial commitment every year to our school library, college and career center, student newspaper, graduation ceremony, new club start up fees, student body picnics, professional staff training and development, teacher appreciation luncheons, school phone directory, parent newsletter and website, and Project Graduation (the all night alcohol and tobacco free party for graduating seniors).
This year the goal is to complete the technology funding for the new Language Lab for the Foreign Language Department with proceeds from this event.
The generous proceeds from last year’s event enabled us to purchase the new photography darkroom equipment, a video camera for Firebird Word Studio, and computer equipment for academic areas. The Golf Tournament and Auction also allowed CHAPTS to help with funding for Project Graduation, and the opportunity to spend a wonderful day and evening with the Chaparral parent community.
We would love for you to participate in any way you can! Get a Foursome together; be a Hole Sponsor; Donate auction items; be a Bidder at the auction! If you can’t attend, consider donating the cost of dinner and/or golf, so one of our teachers or faculty can participate! Don’t golf? Join us for the Steak or Chicken Dinner and Auction. This year’s theme is Mardi Gras, so get ready for fun, and bring some friends! This year’s Live and Silent Auction items promise to be the best ever!
We are offering a reserved table for ten if you register and pay by Feb10th with one of the following options:
One DRIVER Sponsorship, one HYBRID Sponsorship, or ten guests for dinner.
***As added incentive and appreciation, every golfer will receive a beautiful golf bag embroidered with the Chaparral Firebird Logo!***
Please respond and reserve your spots at your earliest convenience!
Questions? Donations? Email David: dccigar8@cs.com or Peter: prk@cox.net

December 2007: National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month
December has been designated by Presidential Proclamation as National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month (also known as 3D Month). Since 1981, every President of the United States has demonstrated his commitment to preventing impaired driving by striving to increase public awareness and prevention and supporting public- and private-sector organizations committed to preventing crashes caused by impaired driving.
Recent research highlights the continuing need for this emphasis, particularly among America's youth:

On Wednesday, January 16th, all Scottsdale Unified School District high schools will have a latestart school day. The purpose of this day is to administer the PSSS exam to sophomores. In years past, the school district has paid for every sophomore to take the PSAT in the fall.
This year, however, the PSAT was offered during our fall break, so we could not administer it on campus. Instead, SUSD has paid for our sophomores to take the PSSS (Pre-SAT Scoring Service). This test is essentially the same as the PSAT. Its questions are similar, and it also gives the students and the school an idea of how the students will perform on the SAT. Sophomores who paid to take the PSAT over October break will not participate in the PSSS.
Testing on the 16th will begin promptly at 8:15 am. For those students who will not be testing, first period will begin at 11:32 am. If you have questions about the PSSS, the PSAT, or testing in general, please contact either me or your student’s counselor.
Sincerely,
Kyle Ross

Campus Parking
Parents,
As you probably know, our parking lot situation at Chaparral has been one of the biggest challenges this year since we’ve been under construction. We had to reduce the number of available parking places for students to make way for new buildings, so we only had about 300 student spaces available. We created a partnership with the church north of campus to help with the overflow, but parking has remained a problem.
Recently, the situation has been exacerbated by students parking in the student and staff lots on campus without a permit. The offending students are sophomores, juniors, and seniors. This is inconvenient for and unfair to those seniors who paid money for parking spaces. Students who do not display a 2007-2008 parking sticker are not allowed to park on campus during school hours.
In order to combat this growing problem, we will be changing our security and enforcement measures in our parking lot. First, sophomores and juniors who are caught parking on campus will forfeit their right to future parking permits. Additional school discipline may also result as per the Student Code of Conduct. Additionally, illegally parked cars will have a parking violation sticker affixed to the driver’s side window. These stickers are inconvenient and difficult to remove. Finally, we will tighten security at the gate as students arrive.
We ask for your assistance in encouraging your students not to park on campus if they do not have a permit. Parking will continue to be tight until construction is completed. We must work together to meet our parking needs.
Sincerely,
Kyle Ross

Powderpuff Game and Yavapai Drive
Chaparral Parents,
There are two very exciting events going on at Chaparral right now – our annual Powderpuff game and the Yavapai Drive!
Chaparral’s Junior Class Student Government needs as much of your and your children’s support for Powderpuff as we can get. The Powderpuff game is a non-contact girls’ football game; all players need to do is buy a shirt, fill out a permission form, and come to practices! All of the proceeds go towards Prom fundraising, along with the entrance fee for kids and parents who go to the game. Practices for each grade are going on after school all this week on the football field at Chaparral, and the game is this Friday, December 14th. Please encourage your children to play in or come to this game, because it is a ton of fun and the money is absolutely necessary for Prom! If you have any questions about Powderpuff, please contact Mrs. Maccoll at 480.484.6500 ext. 5214, or contact Kirsten Adams (check school directory for telephone number.)
Student Government’s other big event is the Yavapai Drive. Each 2nd hour class is in charge of granting a ‘wish list,’ which consists of three things they want for the holidays, for one underprivileged child or parent. We are collecting presents this Friday and next Monday for all classes, and are in dire need of presents! These families count on us for the wish lists to be granted, and what we give them is all they receive for the holidays. Every little thing counts, and both the parents and children are more than grateful when we deliver the gifts to their homes. We need you and your children to involve yourselves in this event because it means the world to the Yavapai families! Your student can find out from his or her 2nd hour class what gifts the designated child is asking for and we would greatly appreciate donations of either gifts or money to buy the gifts. This drive is one of our biggest community service projects of the year and the children cherish every little gift they receive. There is only one week left so don’t miss your chance to help with the Yavapai Drive! If you have any questions, please contact McKenzie Manning (check school directory for phone number.)

Help Scottsdale Unified Schools While Reducing Your State Tax Bill!
T'was the night before the New Year,
And all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even the computer mouse.
Preparations are made to bring in the New Year,
When suddenly you remember
Tax credit time is here!
You run to your computer,
With a mad dash,
To make your tax credit contribution,
To SUSD with a flash.
Dollar for dollar, tax credit is applied each year,
Your donation costs you nothing but
Will bring our students, athletes and other programs great cheer.
So as the end of the year draws out of sight,
Remember, donate tax credit,
To help SUSD's future stay bright!
A win, win situation! Arizona law allows taxpayers to receive a tax credit of up to $200 for individual filers and up to $400 for married filers. You can claim the tax credit when filing your 2007 Arizona State Income Tax. The school must receive the funds by December 31, 2007.

Student Government Needs Your Help
Student Government has already begun planning for this school year in a great way even despite their largest obstacle - CONSTRUCTION!! Due to construction Student Government has had to be very creative in combining the many wonderful activities they hold for all students. Student Government will orchestrate a spectacular “Flash” Thursday night during homecoming week. The homecoming dance has always been held in our gymnasium but if you have visited campus lately you might have noticed that we don’t have a gym. So this year Student Government will be sponsoring the dance at an off-campus location. This is where they really could use our help. The off-campus location comes with a rental fee. Student Government is asking for any and all donations in order to keep their expenses and costs down. They hope that local businesses and families will be able to contribute this year. Student Government has always raised money each school year and has been able to fund so many incredible events for the Chaparral Student Body. Historically homecoming has been their largest fundraiser. If you would like to donate or have any questions, please contact McKenzie Manning. Donor’s names will be acknowledged. Tax deductible donations can be made payable to Chaparral High School Student Government.

Phones in classroom are not working
We apologize for the disruptions that we are having due to construction. Phones are not working and functional in all classrooms and we are getting messages to teachers the old fashioned way via paper (do not leave messages on teacher phones as we cannot retrieve them). If you need to speak to a teacher it is best to email them by going to the www.susd.org website, click on schools, Chaparral and go to departments. If you know their first name emails are the first initial of the teachers’ first name and their last name @susd.org.

Parking
Student Parking this year will ONLY be available in the south lot at this time for SENIORS only. Seniors were provided an opportunity to participate in the lottery in May to request a parking spot. Students will be assigned a NUMBERED parking spot. At this time, it appears we will have 100 less spaces for students on campus. ONLY those seniors who requested to participate in the lottery will be assigned spots at this time. If more spots become available, I will let everyone know and we will hold a second lottery.
Faculty/Staff Parking will be in the Northwest Lot and the area in the south lot closest to the 200 building. Spaces will be numbered and assigned for all faculty and staff. There will be NO student parking in these areas.
Visitor/Volunteer Parking will be in the south lot and will be marked accordingly. If you live within the area where bus service is provided, it is my recommendation that your child ride the bus this year. We will do our best with what we have available.
