Update from CHAPTS
October 2008
Dear Chaparral Families,
October is a very busy month for Chaparral. Our sports teams are off to a great start, new clubs being formed and STUGO activities are well underway. We have a wonderful year ahead.
The Homecoming/Grand Opening will be held Oct 24, 4:30-6:30pm. The football game follows at 7PM. We hope you will attend the festivities. MARK YOUR CALENDARS; the invitation is included in this newsletter.
Our community is also coming forward to help raise funds for our students. Many thanks go out to Game Zone for hosting a "Chaparral Day" for Chaparral students, their friends and families on October 4th. A flier for this special event is included in the newsletter as well. By participating, FUNDS WILL BE DONATED TO CHAPTS! We are open to other activities and events. If interested, please call Carla.
Visit the CHAPTS website www.CHAPTS.org frequently for updates.
Have you joined CHAPTS yet? CHAPTS is your parent/teacher organization, Chaparral High Association of Parents and Teachers. If you are not yet a member, please consider joining. It is easy, just go to our website at www.chapts.org and fill out the paperwork, under the heading forms and submit it to the office. CHAPTS membership is the only way to get a copy of our highly coveted school directory. Please join CHAPTS; all donations are tax deductible. With your donations, CHAPTS has the ability to support many programs that enrich our students' lives at CHS. These wonderful programs and activities would not be possible without your support.
Please attend our next CHAPTS meeting; it will be October 13 in the Chaparral Library. These meetings are very informative. You will get to meet our Student Government, listen to updates from community members and faculty and have the opportunity to vote (if you are a CHAPTS member) on how the money donated to CHAPTS is distributed and spent. Our Principal, Mary Lou Muccino, comes to every meeting to give an update about campus news and events. She will also have a question and answer period.
Would you like to volunteer? It is easy if you want to be involved but have limited time; there are openings to fit any schedule. Your involvement is so important to our school and very appreciated by Chaparral faculty and administration. It is a wonderful way to keep your finger on the pulse of your child's school and activities, In addition you will have the opportunity to work with the best parent volunteers and make new friends and connections.
CHAPTS newsletter is published monthly and will be available at www.CHAPTS.org We will send you an email letting you know that the current newsletter has been posted to the website. Please check the website and your email often for updates, we do post and email messages, often urgent, from the front office with information regarding the campus, buses, etc.
Sincerely,
Carla Partridge

Update from the Principal
September 2008
Dear Chaparral Parents,
The beginning of this school year has gone much smoother than last year. This summer’s walk through registration (fee payment, ID’s) process was the best ever. Thanks to Kyle Ross, Assistant Principal and Carla Partridge as well as all the parent volunteers for making this process "as painless as possible." The new cafeteria offered parents and students a cool place with more space than we have ever had available. The addition of a counselor to the process allowed students to fix problems with their schedules prior to the start of the school year. Again, my sincere thanks to everyone involved in making this process successful.
To those of you, who attended our annual Open House, thank you for taking the time to support your children and Chaparral High School. I know everyone is busy and with work, children, and the obligations we all have in life yet it was wonderful to see the large number of truly involved parents. I hope you enjoyed seeing the new campus and were pleased with all the progress made over the past two years.
As we approach the end of the fifth week of school, I am happy to say that the completion of the south lot is on schedule. If all continues to go as planned, the south lot should be completed by October 24th-- just in time for Homecoming! An update on the locker situation: some of the old lockers are being refurbished and new lockers have been ordered to replace those that have been on this campus for the past twenty-five years. When I have a completion date for the lockers, I will post the information on our website. Teachers have been working diligently to get their new School Fusion websites up to date and grades on-line and the phone extensions in all the new buildings are in place and working.
This year, we will continue to focus on academics as we have in the past. It is the goal of this administration and faculty to continue improving test scores for all students. Last year’s AIMS scores for 10th graders showed 93% either exceeded or met the standards in math and 95% either met or exceeded the standards in both reading while 90% of the sophomore class taking the AIMS exams passed the writing section. This year, our academic focus will be on reading across the content area with a focus on functional reading. Additionally, this year we will begin working with the faculty of both Copper Ridge and Cocopah Middle Schools’ during the district in-service dates to begin the vertical articulation between our campuses.
I would like to personally thank each of you for your continued involvement in your children’s education. As you have heard me say many times in the past, Chaparral High School is one of the best in the state of Arizona because of the caliber of teachers in the classroom, students who come prepared and willing to learn, and an involved parent community. I believe the teaching staff will challenge your children by providing a rigorous curriculum while allowing them to reach their potential. Should you have any concerns please feel free to contact the teacher and as always, feel free to voice any concerns you have to your grade level assistant principal or to me. All of us value your feedback and information. I wish each of you a wonderful year.
